As I’ve mentioned in the past couple of days, DL Foster has become obsessed with debunking John Boswell and his book Christianity, Social Tolerance and Homosexuality. Without understanding what the book is about, yesterday DL Foster listed some authors (which he took from a footnote from a course I list below) from antiquity to show that the church did not accept gay and lesbians. What you will notice is that Boswell does not deny these passages at all, and DL Foster would like you to believe that Boswell does not deal with them. However, the truth can be easily seen.
He writes:
Though somewhat controversial, The Didache, yet reflects the prevailing Christian rejection of homosexuality within the Christian context:
“You shall not commit murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not commit pederasty, you shall not commit fornication, you shall not steal, you shall not practice magic, you shall not practice witchcraft, you shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill one that has been born” (Didache 2:2 [A.D. 70]).
Actually, if Foster had bothered to pick up the Didache, he would have noticed that this passage is 1:2. And, if he had bothered to pick up John Boswell’s book, he will see that Boswell looks at the Didache (this very same passage he cites). Please see pg. 139, note 9. Pedastery is sex with children, and has nothing to do with homosexuality. See also p. 179 and 346. Foster makes it sound like he has made some big discovery or that Boswell somehow did not discuss the passage, but that is just a lie.
He also cites Justin Martyr:

There has been some news lately about the mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Fl who is making a big stink about supposed illegal sex at parks and beaches–of course by gay men.
What I find more interesting is the fact that some people are obsessed about this story–but they never seem to mention that the police of Fort Lauderdale state that there have been no arrests for this behavior. So it is all hype and a bit of political theater for those ignorant masses of people who think that gay men just love having sex in park toilets and beaches. Take for one example Stacy Harp. On July 24 Stacy actually made a video to have people call in their support of Mayor Jim Naugle. Then on July 25, Stacy made another video (an updated version of her previous work) and titled her post “Homosexual Activists Continue to Attack Mayor Naugle). One part of this video states:
Who is Trying to Stop Him? Militant Homosexual Activists, who support illegal sex in public bathrooms!!!
While I won’t comment on this little love-fest that Stacy is having for the Naugle, I will comment on what she had to say above. I challenge Stacy Harp to find a ‘militant homosexual activist’ who is against Naugle because he/she supports ‘illegal sex in public bathrooms.’ Come on Stacy, put your mouth where your video is! I want to know who supports illegal sex in public. What Stacy doesn’t get is that people are against Naugle because he unfairly portrays gays and lesbians in his little witch hunt (which by the way the accusations are totally unsupported by the police, as I said above).

DL Foster pens an interesting note on John Boswell, who was a Yale history professor until he died of AIDS. The book that Foster is referring to is Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality. It is an amazing book, not just for the topic but just for the incredible research that was put into this work. The footnotes alone are like reading another book. Unfortunately, and as usual, it appears that Foster only quotes what other people have to say about it instead of actually reading and understanding the book. On the other hand, my copy is one of the most worn-out books that I own.
I first read this book years ago and I have to say that the most frustrating part of this book were the footnotes. Most of them contain the original languages, which include (among others) Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Boswell knew that his topic was controversial and gave his audience as much background information and supporting material as he could. When I first read the book I did not have the languages to fully appreciate what he did. But now I do and re-reading the book has been an eye-opening experience. That is not to say you can’t understand it if you don’t know the languages–that is not the case at all. It is an amazing piece of scholarship and anyone interested in Christianity and its history with gays and lesbians should really read it and the follow-up volume, Same-sex Unions in Pre-Modern Europe.
About Boswell and the book Foster states:

That is the title of an email I received just a bit ago (without the question mark). Talk about drama queens! This was an email sent out from none other than Randy Thomasson, the “founder and president” of the Campaign for Children and Families. By the way, he is also the treasurer for VoteYesMarriage.com. No big surprise, since I guess he needs to make money somehow and like Peter LaBarbera, about the only way he can do that is off the backs of gays and lesbians.
But this time he is really, really desperate for money. Here is the opening lines of the email (I’ve removed the links):
Please forward to your principled friends
TO: California Members of Townhall.com
FR: Randy Thomasson, Treasurer, VoteYesMarriage.com Coalition
RE: LARGE DONATIONS NEEDED TO SAVE MARRIAGE IN CALIFORNIA
Help Defeat Liberal Politicians and Activist Judges!
I guess I am sending this out to ‘unprincipled’ friends? :) Here is more:
Today the enemies of marriage are the activist judges of the infamously wacky California Supreme Court. These judges are expected to impose same-sex “marriages” upon every California community as soon as February.
The other big enemy of marriage is the Democrat-controlled California Legislature. The ultra-liberal politicians there are about to pass AB 43 mandating “gender-neutral” marriages. AB 43 actually deletes “a man and a woman” from California’s marriage laws.
And what’s more, if they get their way in California, you know they will push their anti-family, anti-child agenda nationally, but we have a plan to beat them!

I’ve written about the GCMW before. It is run by the ex-gay DL Foster, who never, ever has anything truly good to say. He is so hung up about proving his own heterosexuality by bashing gays and lesbians. By that method he will never, ever, get someone to think about turning gay to straight (and I don’t even know if that can be done. I suppose I would believe it more if straights could turn gay, but that doesn’t seem to be in the realm of possibility).
Yesterday Foster picked up on some fairly old news. It was about some billboards that a church used to show the possibility of same-sex relationships in the bible. I’m not going to say too much about it because I have written about some of these examples before (especially on David and Jonathan and their love for each other). DL Foster writes (about these couples):
We posit again the implausibility, if not complete impossibility of such a sexual relationship primarily because under Levitical law homosexuality was condemned with punishment of death. David did violate the anti-adultery law with Bathsheba and was severely punished by God himself. Even the first child of the relationship died as a consequence of the sin.
He writes that just because an Old Testament law condemned homosexuality, it would be implausible, if not completely impossible for such relationships to occur. If you can’t understand that laws are created to stop behavior that is already occurring (why else create a law to stop something if not to stop the real thing?), then you can at least look at some modern day law. Murder occurs, yet there are laws that punish people with death if they murder. To say that it is implausible or impossible that there are murderers is just ridiculous. It is the same with same-sex relationships in Hebrew history. We existed. Period. There is nothing that those at Gay Christian Movement Watch can do to change real history. Maybe DL Foster can posit something more useful in the future.
